Action – When it is one player’s turn to ‘act’ this called taking your action. It also can refer to a willingness to take risks, meaning that there is a great deal of action in the game being played.
Active Player – Anyone who is still in the game and playing for the pot in a game of poker. When there are pots on the side, all in active players may be involved in several of the pots at stake but they do not have to be in all of them to be considered active.
Back In – When one enters a pot after checking first then calling another player’s open during the 1st round of betting. This tends to be in games such as Jackpots where it means that one enters without an opener.
Bank – This refers to the house or the place that is in charge of running the poker game at the table. It is the house that will hand out the chips, change cash into chips and run the game in an effort to keep things fair. They also pay winners at the end of the game.
Big Bet Game – This is a no limit or a pot limit game, in terms of the betting structure it features.
Case Card – The final card available in a certain rank. This could be said as the only way a player could win the game is to get dealt the ‘case jack’, meaning the last jack in the deck.
Dirty Stack – This is a stack of poker chips that are normally in a single denomination but have other chips slipped in there, obscured from view. It can be done accidentally but sometimes is a trick players will try to get the upper hand.
Final Table – The very last table that a group of players will play at during a poker tournament where there are multiple tables. This means that the number of people playing are reduced from the original levels until the last game can play – generally less that 10 people.
Going South – This refers to trying to sneak some of a player’s chips away from the table while the game is going and thereby lower the stakes being risked. Not allowed in public card games such as at casinos.
Kitty – This is a pool of money that is put together from small contributions from different pots and is used to buy food or drinks for those playing poker. Normally this is a feature of a home game.
Quarter - When a player is attempting to get a quarter of the pot, they will try to tie the low or high hand in a hi low split poker game. Most players don’t find this idea because they normally are putting in a third of the pot, but they will take less of a loss this way, at least.
Rack – This is 100 chips in the same denomination and is generally in 5 separate stacks in the plastic chip tray. Can also refer to the tray itself that is storing the rack of chips.
Railbird – A person that is ’sitting on the rails’ observing a game of poker while not actually taking part.
Short Stack – Simply a stack of poker chips that is fairly small in comparison with the game that is being played.
